Jaya Mahadevia 11/18/1928 - 4/23/2020

Our mom, grandma, and great grandma, Jaya Mahadevia lovingly called Ilan, passed away on Thursday April 23rd 2020. During her 92 years, she lived a long and inspirational life with love, laughter, and family.

Ilan was born on November 11th 1928 in Ahmedabad, India. She received her Bachelors of Arts from SNTD in English. She married Dr. Shahikant Mahadevia in 1950 and raised 5 daughters: Achala, Chetna, Jayshree, Krishna and Isha and she also took care of so many other children of extended family.

She did everything on her own terms with a spark in her eyes from cooking, to telling everyone what to do. She had a will of her own and never gave up. She would always start the first garba for Mataji during Navratri and had a passion for singing, painting, hand embroidery, and teaching. She taught so many of her grandchildren English, Hindi, and grammar in both languages. She loved traveling and has been to places from Sri Lanka, Hawaii, to Iceland, and CharDham to Mansarovar. She had a passion for finding new recipes on facebook, commenting on everyone's status (in an innovative way), and writing down things that intrigued her. She is known for her wit, charm, determination, diligence, and vivaciousness.

From taking care of 5 strong daughters on her own, to coming to America, and to her last few weeks - she always persevered. We will continue to pray and continue our lives from her strong example - by being brave, strong and vibrant. We would like this website to be a memory of her legacy and all the lives she's impacted and the family which has grown and fostered because of her.

Please continue to share your memories with her here.

  1. We, and our entire family, are extremely saddened by the passing away of the grandma, as how we called her. We feel she had a special liking to us, but that's how probably she was with everyone. She was always smiling. We miss her. Our Shradhanjali! 🙏 May God give family and friends, us, all strength to withstand the loss. - Siddhi, Shivam, Shraddha, Alka, Sandeep, Madhuri, Ashok, Mom, and others in India.

  2. Whatever I say would not be and never be enough! Jayamami was just amazing - she had phenomenal strength that too with enthusiasm and love and that too at the age of 90. While Nirupamamummy was like daughter to her, I too got privileged to get motherly love from Jayamami and of course 5 sisters. Well, I have unlimited memories of Shrimali, but even after leaving Shrimali and during her trips to India and our trips to USA, I continued to get undivided attention. And with me, Monica and Kshitij too got a special position. And on a lighter note, because of her disciplined nature, I also learnt and loved to eat 'karela nu sak'. Well, well, this space or my words would never be enough. I pray that her soul rest in peace and why not, she has left a very happy family behind... Jaishrikrishna

  4. I remember Jayamami/my elder sister as a very good singer, singing many Garbas at time of Navratri, in the compound of Shrimali Society. Her voice was very sweet. Every one was insisting her for singing newer Garbo. She was also playing Garba, Hintch very nicely. I will never forget her picture of that time .

  10. I was fortunate to attend LILA's meeting once at your residence.
With all participants distinct performance, time spent was memorable.
At the same time I cannot resist mentioning, totally different
contribution by Jayaba. She had her own collection and the spirit and
enthusiasm with which she dominated is deeply registered in the mind.
Naturally, when this pleasant memory is touched by sad news it is bound
to give a shock. There is an expression " She lived her full life.
" It has nothing to do with the void created by her departure. Loss
is irreparable, words are insufficient to offer any kind of
consolation. It is our prayer to Almighty that let her soul rest in
peace and He may give you enough strength to feel the house with her
loving feeling scattered all over, with courage and fortitude. Let
    her soul rest in peace.
Incidentally, my wife Meena with her background at Boriavi I had
some enjoyable talk with family members and that conversation is still
green in my mind. I with my family request you to accept our
consolation and assure you that you are not alone in this time of
grief. With respect to the departed soul.

  11. I am lucky to have two moms. I lived with Grandma for twenty five years and now she will live in my heart forever.
She was the Boss of our house. She lived her life on her own terms and even left us when she wanted. Like Amitabh Bacchan: " Hamne Kah Diya so Kah Diya."
She gave us lots of affection, love and discipline. She was kind, caring, loving and fun at the same time she was strong, stubborn and tough.
She loved to cook and I was her experimental lab. She loved to travel and she will join us to every single adventures. Sometimes she volunteers herself to come with me for my meetings like Hawaii and she made her itinerary also on a different island. Mansarovar and Char Dham, Iceland and Europe, yellow stone or Canadian Rockies: She is always ready.
She had innocence and playfulness of a child and stubbornness also like a child. She mastered I phone, I pad and Facebook. When I offered to upgrade from 10 to 11: she said if you do that I will stop using phone.
Her donations were for School, Cancer and health.
We learn that life is precious and fragile. Live and enjoy every moment. Lets live a life which enlightens and inspires others, create memories to cherish, leave a legacy to follow and fragrance of generosity to last forever.

Our condolences to Achalaben, Chetna, Isha, Jayshree, Krishna and their families.

Our fond memories about Jayaben is her being so vibrant, lively and her sense of humor. But the fondest memory is her “Dudhi Chana nu Shak”. It was my least favorite but she made it my favorite (only when she made it). Even with the recipe, Achalaben or Dolly did not come close. Ok, Achalaben did come close, once.

You are all blessed to have her for so long, however, it hurts the same no matter how long our loved ones stay with us. Though she is gone albeit to a better place, remembering and cherishing her memories will be a great tribute to her.

Our prayers are with your families and for Jayaben.

  13. My mother's life was like a open book. Her name though was Jaya Amin,Jaya Mahadevia, I gave her a name 'Ilaben- became Ilan' . She was born on an auspicious day of Hindu calendar,Labh Pancham, but she didn't think so,as at very Young age she lost her mother and she had to take care of two house holds. Her childhood was lost in that responsibilities. Marriage with my father was of course a good luck, but giving birth to five girls, became a bad luck for her,as society at that time was inclined for a male child eventhough she didn't think that way at all. She got support from her husband and two sisters in laws for that. She was lucky in that respect. But when she lost her husband, again she thought that she wished she shouldn't be born on Labh Pancham. But her best luck came in the form of her five son in l aws,who were making up for not having any sons of her own. All son in laws respected her and Loved her just as their own mother. At that point she really believed that God blessed her and her birthday on Labh Pancham was in true sense worth it. So she accepted God's blessings and was very happy. All her grandchildren ,Mansi, Darshini, Shruti, Aditi,Vaishal, Prateek, Shravan Ruju and Setu, all loved her, respected her and adored her. She is well remembered by her great grand kids also,Shanay,Malhar, Arjun,Asha,Ayana,Rishan,Pratvee and Pravee. God really blessed you mother, and appropriately sent you on Earth on Labh Pancham day. Will miss you Ilan. Now who I will call everyday? Who will ask me all vierd questions everyday? 🙏

  20. Hi Isha,
I attended the respectful and loving viewing of your mother yesterday.
It reminded me of the the saying I always believed in:
Hundred years down the road you will not be remembered by what kind of job you did, or what kind of house you lived in or how much money you made. You will be remembered by what difference you made in a child ‘s life.
She gifted the world by raising a wonderful person like you and your kids and may God bless her kind soul and your beautiful family .
We are blessed to have you as our friend.

Jaya Ma was kind, loving, hardworking and compassionate! She raised and nurtured her immediate family, took care of in-laws and extended family, and donated generously for the needy! Above all, Jaya Ma showered selfless love on all of us cousins!

In her latter years, she took keen interest to connect with friends and family around the world through FB and WhatsApp. My husband, Amit Shah, posts numerous things on FB and Jaya Ma invariably responded to them enthusiastically! I salute to her milk of kindness and zest for life!

I am sure she is very peaceful and blissful in the spirit world, reuniting with some of her departed loved ones! Love you, Ma!

  35. I am a childhood friend of Hasmukh Amin. I met Jayaba in November 1973 at Mahadevia residence in Shrimali Society. Hasubhai and I had to wait, because she was giving a bath to her advanced-age and feeble mother-in-law. Amazing! Hats off to her!

Almost ten years later, in May 1983, I, with Mahadevia and Amin Parivar, spent the day together for Brooklyn Bridge 100th Anniversary celebration. At that evening we watched the fireworks done on the lap of the bridge from very close proximity from my office in municipal building. The day spent was very joyous and the important thing was I did not feel that I am an outsider of the family.

The day spent in Great Adventure Amusement and Safari Park became a life long memory for me. Again the same experience. She was so 'UTSUK' to take all the rides, even the newly opened 'Free Fall' ride. Very scary ride.

Jayaba was indeed a sporty nature person. She was noble in nature, loving and religious person.

May God rest her soul in eternal peace.

Our prayer to Bhagwan Swaminarayan to give strength to family in this difficult time.

  36. Memories of Jayaben/Jayamami as MIDNIGHT MARRIAGE.

I vividly have three memories in my mind of Pujya Jayaben/Jayamami.

Jayaben was my elder sister , my Nanifoi's elder daughter , who later married to my uncle (my mother's brother) Shashikantmama& hence I atarted calling her Jayamami.

My first strong memory of Jayaben/Jayamami is her "MIDNIGHT MARRIAGE' .

That night was one of the cold night & my mother Bhanumati & my father Ramanlal-both were very happy because, my mother's brother Shashikant was getting married to my father's niece Jaya.

At that time usually marriage ceremony was conducted at night time. So after dinner, we all took our seat around marriage mandap, so called 'Chori' Around 11.30to 12.00 midnight, Pujari/Gor Maharaj announced "Kanya Padhravo Savdhan" My father Ramanlal, being Mama of Jayaben, brought her in the marriage mandap.

Being a very young child, I was eager & very curious to observe the bride. Usually bride looks most beautiful, nicely dressed up, good hairstyle & many ornaments etc etc. Jayaben had pot on white sari (Panetar). Her hairs are open & wet. Hairs were not combed & water was dribbling from her hair. Ithought, she must have taken bath, washed her hairs & then got ready. She was looking very charming, walking slowly with shy in her eyes. She was asked to take her seat in the marriage Mandap.

Procedure of marriage ceremony started. Chanting was going on, one after another. It took more than a hour. Night was going on & weather was getting cool & cool. JAYABEN STATRED SHIVERING because of increasing cold & wet hairs. No one was concerned about her shivering.I was getting angry in my mind, feeling pity for her. All relatives in the audience were getting up as they were feeling sleepy after heavy dinner. I also felt sleepy & slept there only.

When marriage ceremony was over, my mother woke me up. MIDNIGHT MARRIAGE was over where bride was shivering & bridegroom had no problem as he was fully dressed. It was early morning.
Shivering Jayaben & Shashikantmama were not there.
Still I have this picture in my mind & will never forget it.

  38. Jay Shree Krishna, Dear Family,

Myself, Dr. Tushar Amin, son of late Sri Surendra Amin and Maltiben Amin, on behalf of Amin family we all pay respect and heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Jaya foi. It is is very sad and painful to hear about the demise. We all pray to God to give us strength to bear the pain. May her soul rest in peace. Jaya foi was very active and oldest in age member of Amin and Mahadevia family on Facebook. We will always miss her words of appreciation and encouragement on Facebook. Her five daughters and five son-law-like sons and her grandchildren always helped and supported her to live such a beautiful and wonderful life where there is no birth, or old age, or death where there is no separation from loved ones, where there not the transience of all things, who would not take delight in life in the world. The life of a human being is not judged by how many years but it is judged by how they lived the life. Looking at her anyone can be happy and remembering her anybody can have tears in her eyes. She lived her life for everybody.

God please, give her a good life in the next birth.
